MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a very powerful radiology examination which provides two or three dimensional views of the inside of the body.MRI is intended to investigate lesions which are not visible in standard radiography, ultrasound or scans. It involves taking images of the human body using the numerous hydrogen atoms which it contains.
Prior to the MRI examination, the patient is asked to undress. They are given a gown, a cap and slippers and generally are given an injection of a contrast product in order to enhance the legibility of images.
The patient lies down on a table in a tunnel. The examination lasts between 30 to 60 minutes. MRI is a noisy method. Where possible, the patient is given a headset that plays music of their choice, except for brain MRI, where patients are offered ear plugs.
Strict contraindications to MRI are: metal fragments in the eyeball or a pacemaker. Patients with a heart valve or surgical clips for brain aneurysms must provide the model and number of their valve or clip, to check compatibility with the MRI. Claustrophobia is a relative contraindication.
